Things to do in McKinney, Austin
McKinney is an inexpensive area in which to live and be close to nature, yet not far from the city. It is close to Austin Bergstrom International Airport and so noise can be a problem. The entire southeast Austin area also has a reputation for seediness and crime. However, this neighborhood is one of the better parts of the area.
The east section of the neighborhood is adjacent to McKinney Falls State Park, with 700 acres of green space, forest, and wildlife. The park has waterfalls, interesting rock formations, and good nature views. There are also hiking and bike trails, camp sites and picnic areas, and fishing and swimming in Onion Creek.
Also in the area is Dove Springs Recreation Center, which includes a gymnasium with full-sized basketball court, a weight room, arts and crafts room, computer lab, dance studio, conference room, and TV room. On the grounds of the center are ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, a volleyball pit, a swimming pool, playscape, and a hiking trail.
The neighborhood is close to I-35 and Hwy. 71, two major local highways. However, commuting into and out of the neighborhood with the infamous Austin traffic can be a problem during peak hours.
The older, more established part of the neighborhood is the northern section, with hotels, strip malls, and some older homes on large lots and tree-lined streets. In this section are some unusual businesses such as Greenling organic grocery delivery, Gemini Playhouse, and Independence Brewing Company. The brewery offers tours, and every first Saturday of the month transforms its parking lot into a live music concert venue, and gives out free samples of beer.
The southern section has newer, smaller houses, and lower home prices because it is further from central Austin. The east section blends in with the state park, with starry skies and sounds of wildlife at night. Although it doesn’t offer much for a young professional looking for active nightlife, the neighborhood can be attractive for a family looking for a quiet residential setting.
