Gate Types We Install

Not every gate project needs automation, and not every automated gate’ll need an intercom system. What you’ll need depends on the application. Here’s what we install across residential and commercial projects:

Residential gates

  • Pedestrian gates: 3 to 4 foot wide walk-through gates for yard access, side-yard shortcuts, and pool safety compliance. Standard hinges and self-latching hardware, or self-closing for pool code
  • Service gates: 4 to 6 foot wide gates for trash bin access, utility service, HVAC replacement clearance. Typically hidden alongside the house or along back-of-property fence lines
  • Backyard access gates: standard 4-foot gates in wood privacy or cedar fences for garden and lawn access. Hardware coordinated with fence style
  • Automated driveway gates: 12 to 20+ foot wide swing or slide gates with electric operators, typically integrated with existing ornamental iron fence installations at estate front entries
  • Pool safety gates: self-closing, self-latching gates meeting Texas Chapter 757 requirements, integrated with iron or chain link pool barriers

Commercial gates

  • Slide gates: rolling gates for commercial driveways, contractor yards, self-storage facilities, and industrial perimeters. Typically 20 to 40 feet wide with rail-guided or cantilever mechanisms
  • Cantilever gates: no bottom rail or track, so debris and snow do not jam the gate. Standard for commercial installations where reliability matters
  • Bi-parting swing gates: two-leaf gates that open from the center, common for wider commercial driveways that need faster open cycles than a single slide gate
  • Barrier arm gates: pivot-arm gates for parking lot access control, corporate campuses, and industrial site entry points
  • Emergency access gates: coded lockboxes and Knox Box coordination for fire department access on commercial and multi-family properties

Automated Driveway Gates

Automated driveway gates are our largest gate category by project size, and the customer decisions’ll cluster around three questions: what mechanism, what operator, and what access control.

Swing vs slide vs cantilever

  • Swing gates: hinged gates that swing open like a door. Simpler mechanism, lower cost, works well on level driveways with adequate swing clearance. Single-leaf swings for narrow drives, dual-leaf bi-parting swings for wider entries
  • Slide gates: gates that roll horizontally on rails or wheels. Better choice when the driveway’s sloped toward the road (swing gates fight gravity going uphill), when swing clearance’s blocked by landscaping or hardscape, or when the driveway’s narrow
  • Cantilever gates: slide gates that hang from an overhead track with no ground rail. Solve the problem of debris jamming a ground track. Standard on commercial and premium residential

For most Austin residential estate driveways, we’ll default to a dual-leaf bi-parting swing gate when the driveway width and swing clearance allow it. Estate homeowners’ll generally prefer the visual symmetry of a bi-parting gate over a single-leaf swing or a slide gate. Where site conditions make swing impractical (sloped drives, blocked clearance, narrow drives), we’ll transition to slide or cantilever. Commercial and industrial installations default to cantilever slide for reliability.

Operator selection

  • Hydraulic operators: heavy-duty, slower operation, standard on large commercial and estate gates where the gate weight demands hydraulic power. Long lifespan
  • Electromechanical operators: faster operation, lower cost, standard on residential swing and small slide gates. Adequate for gates up to specified weight limits
  • Solar-powered operators: for rural driveways or long-run gates where trenching power lines’ll be impractical. Adequate charging in Central Texas sun; battery-backed for cloudy days

Access Control Options

How people trigger the gate to open is the second major decision in every automation project. Options range from a simple keypad to full property management integration.

  • Keypad: hardwired or wireless keypad on a post at the driveway entrance. Homeowner and family members use a code; guests’ll get a temporary code by phone. Simplest option, lowest maintenance
  • Transmitter/remote: garage-door-style remotes clipped to visor. Fast, familiar, works from inside the car. Standard on almost every residential automated gate
  • App control: smartphone app opens gate from anywhere. Modern LiftMaster MyQ and equivalent DoorKing systems support this natively. Useful for granting access to service providers remotely
  • Intercom: audio or video intercom from a call box at the gate to inside the home. Standard on estates and premium residential where guest management matters. Video adds cost but it’s worth it for security-conscious properties
  • RFID: proximity cards or tags for regular users. Standard on multi-family and commercial where you’re managing many authorized entries per day
  • Vehicle detection loops: inductive loops buried in the driveway detect vehicles for automatic exit (drive up, gate opens) or safety (won’t close on a vehicle). Standard on commercial, common on estate residential
  • Cellular access: modern operators support cellular connections for remote monitoring and control without WiFi dependencies

Coordinated Fence and Gate Projects

Most gate projects come in one of two shapes: retrofitting a gate onto an existing fence, or installing gate and fence together as a coordinated project. Coordinated projects usually deliver better long-term results because the fence and gate are designed to work together from the start.

For fence and gate projects planned together, we’ll sequence the install so gates hang last (after fence panels are set and concrete’s cured), and access control gets wired during fence installation to avoid tearing up finished landscaping. Retrofit projects’ll usually take longer than coordinated projects because we’ve got to work around existing fence conditions.

Automated gate systems have two lifespan clocks: the physical gate structure (matches the fence material lifespan) and the operator/electronics (typically 10 to 20 years). Realistic breakdown:

  • Iron automated gates: 30 to 40 years for the gate itself, matching the fence material
  • Wood gates: 15 to 20 years for the gate leaves (heavier UV and moisture exposure than fence panels), longer for pressure-treated frames
  • Chain link commercial gates: 20 to 25 years for the gate structure, matching galvanized mesh lifespan
  • Electromechanical operators: 10 to 15 years typical, longer with periodic maintenance
  • Hydraulic operators: 15 to 25 years typical, longer with fluid changes and seal maintenance

Gate systems that get annual maintenance’ll last meaningfully longer than gates that only get called on when something breaks. Every gate project starts with a site walk. We measure the opening, note grade and clearance issues, check property markers, discuss automation and access control requirements, and answer material and operator questions. Timeline’ll vary meaningfully by scope: a simple pedestrian gate installs in a few hours; an automated driveway gate with full access control runs 2 to 5 days depending on trenching, electrical work, and system configuration.
