Best Time to Install a Fence in Austin TX

Improper post installation of fence

We get this question a lot: “When should I schedule my fence installation?” After 15+ years of building fences across Central Texas, we’ve learned that the answer depends on what matters most to you—speed, comfort, or availability.

Here in Austin, we don’t deal with frozen ground or months of snow like contractors up north. That means fence installation happens year-round. But some months are definitely easier than others—for you and for us.

Need a fence installed soon? Call us at (512) 900-5735 for a free estimate. We typically respond within 24-48 hours and can give you realistic timing based on our current schedule.

Short Answer: Fall is the Sweet Spot

October and November are hands-down the best months to get your fence done in Austin. The summer heat finally breaks, rain is minimal, and we’re not slammed with calls like we are in June and July.

That said, we install fences year-round. We’ve rebuilt fences after spring storms in March, replaced hail-damaged panels in August heat, and reset posts shifted by December flooding. Each season has its trade-offs, and sometimes you just need a fence now—not in three months when the weather’s perfect.

Season-by-Season Breakdown

Season

The Good

The Not-So-Good

Fall (Oct-Dec)

Perfect temps, barely any rain, faster scheduling

Late December gets tricky with holidays

Winter (Jan-Feb)

Shortest wait times, Austin winters are mild

Hard freezes (rare) pause concrete work

Spring (Mar-May)

Nice weather, done before summer hits

Storm season, expect rain delays

Summer (Jun-Sep)

Dry, predictable, long daylight

Brutal heat, everyone wants fences, 3-4 week waits

Why We Love Fall Installations

Look, we’ll install your fence whenever you need it. But if you’re flexible on timing, here’s why October and November make our job easier—which means a better result for you:

The heat’s finally gone. Working in 75-degree weather versus 102 degrees? Night and day difference. Our crews can work full days without heat breaks, which means your fence gets done faster. Last October, we knocked out an 875-foot composite fence for a subdivision in just two weeks—try doing that in August.

Rain’s not really a thing. Austin averages 2-3 inches of rain total in October and November. Compare that to April’s 4+ inches, and you can see why spring projects get delayed so much.

The soil cooperates. Austin sits on clay that turns rock-hard after a dry summer and becomes a muddy mess after heavy rain. We’ve had jobs where flooding shifted posts right out of the ground—fall hits that sweet spot where the soil is actually workable.

Staining works better. If you’re getting a cedar fence and want staining, fall temperatures are ideal. One customer last year had us replace hail-damaged panels and stain—the finished fence had a rich color that really made the yard pop.

The Reality of Summer Fence Installation

Summer is our busiest season by far. Everyone wants their fence done before the Fourth of July cookout, before the kids’ pool party, before school starts back up. We get it—summer is when you actually use your backyard.

Longer wait times. We’re typically booked 3-4 weeks out during peak summer. In July, sometimes longer. Had a customer call us in a panic last June—needed a dog fence reinforced before their new puppy arrived. We squeezed them in, but it took some schedule juggling.

Early morning starts. Our crews show up at 7 AM during the summer to beat the worst heat. By early afternoon, when it hits 100+, they’re wrapping up.

Winter Fence Work: Austin’s Best-Kept Secret

Here’s something most people don’t realize: winter is actually a great time for fence installation in Austin. We’re not Minneapolis—our “cold” days are still workable.

Most winter days stay above 40 degrees, which is fine for digging and concrete work. The only thing that stops us is a hard freeze—when temperatures drop below 28, concrete won’t cure properly. But those days are rare, and we plan around them.

Pro tip: Winter is the best time to schedule fence repairs. We can usually fit repair jobs in within days instead of weeks. One customer had a storm knock over an entire side of their fence in January—we had it rebuilt in under a week and even upgraded the gate latch at no extra charge.

Spring: Great Weather, Unpredictable Storms

March through May feels like perfect fence weather—and it often is. The problem? Austin’s storm season. We can have gorgeous weather for a week, then three days of heavy rain that turn job sites into mud pits.

We’ve seen spring storms knock down fences that were perfectly fine the day before. Had one customer in April whose cedar fence got hit—we rebuilt it within a week. But the original install? That got delayed twice because of the weather.

Austin-Specific Things That Affect Timing

That Clay Soil

If you’ve gardened in Austin, you know our soil. It’s heavy clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. After heavy flooding, we’ve had to reset posts that literally shifted out of position. Fall finds soil in its most manageable state—not baked solid, not saturated.

HOA Approval Timelines

Live in Circle C, Mueller, or another HOA neighborhood? Add 2-4 weeks to your timeline for approval. We help customers with this all the time—give them design options that meet HOA requirements without looking bland, then help with the approval paperwork. One customer said we “even followed up a week later” to make sure everything was going smoothly.

How to Plan Your Timeline

Call early. 4-6 weeks ahead during busy seasons (spring/summer), 2-3 weeks during fall/winter. We respond within 24-48 hours to schedule your estimate.

Know your HOA rules first. Height limits, material restrictions, color rules—check these before you call. Or let us help you navigate them.

Do you need repair or replacement? A fence inspection can save you money by identifying what actually needs work versus replacing the whole thing.

Bottom Line

Fall is ideal, but we’ve been doing this for 15+ years and work year-round. We’ve handled emergency repairs before outdoor parties, rebuilt storm damage working with insurance companies, and installed fences in every Austin neighborhood from Steiner Ranch to Buda. The best time to install your fence is when it works for your schedule and budget—just plan so you’re not rushing.

Common Questions

October or November. The heat’s gone, rain is rare, and we have better availability. December works too, but holiday schedules can slow things down.

Yep. Austin winters are mild—most days stay above 40, which is fine for fence work. We only pause during hard freezes because concrete won’t set properly.

During summer, call us 4-6 weeks out—we book up fast. Fall and winter, 2-3 weeks is usually fine. If you’re in an HOA, add another 2-4 weeks for their approval process.

Light rain usually doesn’t stop us. Heavy rain or soggy ground might push things back a day or two—we need stable soil to set posts properly.

Our pricing stays consistent year-round. But winter does mean faster scheduling—less wait time to get on the calendar.

We work through Austin summers, but above 100 degrees, we adjust schedules. Crews start early (7 AM) and finish by early afternoon.

Late April through May (storm season) and August (everyone wants fences before school starts, plus it’s miserably hot). Avoid those if you can.

Most residential fences take 1-3 days once we start. Depends on how much fence, what type, and your terrain.
